Background

The Taupo Violence Intervention Network is a collaborative of community groups, agencies and services in the Taupo District that work with families, victims [and in some cases perpetrators] of family violence. The group develops and implements projects to change attitudes and behaviours towards Domestic Violence and to support and assist victims and perpetrators.

The role of the Violence Intervention Network Coordinator is to achieve the objectives of the Taupo Violence Intervention Network (TVIN) which are to enhance community and interagency response to family violence prevention and intervention at a district level.

Logo

The feather symbol relates to the big cloak of Tia. As individual feathers we are singular, but together – each woven into a framework of the cloak, we become a protective mantle. The cloak represents the strong fabric of our community – where we should all be able to find strength, love, protection, caring and value.

Te Kanawa Pitiroi provided the network with the words:
Ko te tika, kia noho tātou ki raro i te maru o te kākahu tiaki tangata.
Ma tātou anō hei rāranga kia oti.

Translated it means:
We have a right to be embraced by all the protecting cloak of mankind.
Let us all lend a hand in weaving it.

Objectives

  • Violence is NOT okay.
  • Being responsible for our own individual actions and responses.
  • Learning to stand up and protect each other from all forms of violence.
  • Making a difference by breaking the cycles, creating change, by taking action.
  • Recognising that our children are our future and family violence impacts on our tomorrow.
  • Recognising that our children are our future and family violence impacts on our tomorrow.
  • Supporting the service providers who work with the effects of violence.
  • Violence elimination is an individual and community responsibility.
  • Ending apathy by promoting positive environments that say NO to violence.

In developing a strategic plan, the Violence Intervention Network (VIN) has considered the value of community agencies working together to address the issues of violence in our community. The development of the strategic plan has taken account of community input and information collated by the VIN coordinator and supported by the Taupo District Council. This is a District Wide strategy.

The objectives in the TVIN strategic plan include the following goals:

  • Provide the resource the community needs to address family violence
  • Proactively work with the media to develop awareness of family violence and the issues
  • Improve accessibility for men to take action on reducing family violence either as victims or perpetrators
  • Increase the awareness of elder abuse and neglect and reduce the incidents
  • Ensure the safety of children and young people from family violence, abuse and bullying
  • Support employers to address family violence
  • Provision of training and development for people who work in the family violence field
  • Support actions to address alcohol abuse in the community
  • Take advantage of opportunities/initiatives as they arise
  • Ensure the strategic plan is a working document
